could i put a jack dempsey preferably an electric blue jack demosey in my 30 gallon tall? if not then plz let me know a good size fish i could put in it as i do NOT want a community tank thanks

Nope, too small. They get a little bigger than a GT I believe and I wouldnt even put a GT in a 30.

Any of the below would be a better choice:

Convict, Firemouth, Acara, Jewel Cichlid, Rainbow Cichlid, Keyhole Cichlid, Any Dwarf Cichlids.

just wondering here but do ebjd get as big as normal ones? because im pretty sure they get like 8-9" correct me if im wrong? And arnt those tanks 12 1/2" wide? or is that only the wide? If they are that wide then i think you could do an EBJD but if those points arnt right then i would say NO.

The tall part would concern me. You could do one for awhile. I would say a 40 breeder at minimum for a solo JD with a 55 being a great tank for life. As far as what else in a 30 tall?? Nothing good sized really. Maybe a salvini or firemouth for color. they both get around 6 inches.

I have a 9.5" Blue Dempsey that is the same length and just as beefy as a very nice looking standard male that is the same age. The reason I believe most people think Blues don't get as big is because they are rarely given the right conditions to truly thrive.

I feel that a 75 gal or bigger is the right sized tank for a Dmepsey (any color). I have seen too many Dempseys raised in tanks smaller than 75 gal end up with arched spines... and ones raised in less than a 4' tank rarely have proper body shape.

Keep in mind a fish is pretty much a small skeleton wrapped in muscle... muscles have to be used to stay healthy. If the fish can only swim it's body length in each direction and it's not going to be healthy.

You will be much hapier with your fish if you get a fish that is appropriate for your tank size or a tank that is appropriate for your desired fish... compromising either will compromise your happiness...

"The happier you make your fish the happier they will make you, minimum requirements means minimum happiness for all" ... that's my signature at Cichlid-Forum...

:iagree: i never really like to recommend a 55, because of the 12" width. 75 with 18" gives the fish more room to turn around and feel comfortable

55s are such terrible tanks for cichlids I think. Its got the length, so a lot of people think they are a "big" tank, but it isn't wide enough for large cichlids.

angels for the tall tank
