got these fish. been looking online and they dont look much like a lot of the dempsey pics. do they change in color quite a bit when they get larger? also can anyone tell is this is a male and a female? ps sorry for the blurry.

They are both JD's and yes they will change color a lot as they get bigger. I'm pretty sure those are to small to sex but I don't know. It would help if you had some vent pictures.

Is it true that you can tell by the spangles on the gill plate? Females go all the way to the bottom and males about 2/3rd.

I did this with mine and it works, since I have a mated pair. Maybe I just got lucky with the spots.

I'm thinking about adding one J.D. to my tank that already has 1 oscar, 1 pbass, and 1 clown knife. not interested in breeding. before I do though ... are they a 'typical' cichlid that will stake out territory and try to keep out other fish out of the area, or with just one will it be more like the oscar in that respect?
