I’ve been wondering and cannot tell. I would really appreciate any help cause it’s driving me crazy. I just want to know, not breeding. I do have him/her with a female salvani and they follow each other around and seem to hide together. So I’m curious about that. Sorry for the spots on the front glass I need to clean it this weekend. Thanks

I would guess male, prob a blue gene Dempsey so prob a lot of inbreeding, ive noticed especially in various cenotes I’ve collected in I found them not easily sexed as compared to your normal lfs Dempsey, both sexes with blue faces…maybe it’s the same with the blue genes, inbreeding causes both sexes to have both traits in males (blue coloring in body) and females (blue faces)?

Thanks for the input I hadn’t considered this. I bought it from a LFS as a regular jd. Im sure it’s more than possible it has some blue gene though. But I’m glad you mention that this guy is more difficult to sex cause I didn’t know if it was just me lol. I did try on my own. I wish it was more definitive but I love the fish so I guess it is what it is.

Welcome aboard!

Welcome to the fishy family!

I would poke a guess as it's a male. Has a smidgen of blue on the chin but not really what females do. Here is a female I had.

Even not in breeding colors, the blue is there

Thanks and wow thank you for even including pictures. I can definitely see a big difference in the bearding on your female. It’s just odd to me how a lot of males seem to have nothing on their lower chin and this guy has quite a bit. Definitely makes things harder. But that’s two people guessing male so I’m starting to lean that way

I am not going off just the bearding, male have a more elongated body vs females have a more oval/egg-shaped body

While this is an EBJD and proven male, you can see how the male is more elongated

Ok this is great I knew that electric blue was shaped like my guy as soon as I looked at the picture. I appreciate the sharing of this knowledge it’s hard to come by. I feel like I can refer to him as a male at this point

If you can get a clear look at the genitals you might be able to say male or female based on what you see

Below was my male ebjd, he was always ready with his tube down. You can see how it’s pointed and hooks forward.

the females, this is my gold jd and not a very good pic you can see her tube is thicker and tube like pointed further back with no hook
