Jack dempsey pair

Hello, i got sold these 2 JD's as a pair, got them cheap because they needed rehoming and the larger of the 2 had some fin tearage.
Im assuming the larger colourful JD is a male and i thought the smaller was female.

Ive been reading up alot and from what ive read it seems like a 50/50 on the sex. The larger is obviously more dominant and flares up alot toward the smaller.
Any help is appreciated (

From that picture it looks like a dominant male and another stressed male. when the lighter one acclimates better take another picture. clsoe up on the gill plate.

Looks kinda like 2 males to me too. The light one is pretty stressed out. I agree that another pic after it's settled down will help.

its a shame, the light one looks such a beauty. why separate if there causing stress to one another
