hi there, i have a large male 2 year old jack dempsey who has recently been moved into a 200 litre tank (from a 80 litre tank) and he is now living with a 35cm gold spot plecostomus. the problem i am having is that my pleco is attacking my jack dempsey! i wasnt expecting this as the pleco has lived with other fish and was fine. i thought my cichlid would be the one the starting the fights as he did in the tank at his previous owners house (he ate every one, so i rescued him 1 1/2 years ago). is this behaviour normal? i'm hoping that it is just because of the new environment etc and they will eventually get to 'like' each other. i cant move my boy back to his small tank because he keeps crashing into stuff and i have no more room in my house for a new tank. does anyone have any suggestions?

Sounds wierd is the pleco just trying to suck the slime coat off the JD? Or does it seem like they are fighting?

definatly fighting. i could hear lots of sploshing and banging, with water all over the floor, then finally saw the pleco fully chasing my boy (pleco started it!). the jack dempsey did bite the pleco back at one stage and the pleco got him back big time. he now has a shredded tail, fins and scales . its quite disturbing to witness.

take out the plec

pleco is too big to move (dont have a larger tank either at the moment..want one tho!) i moved the JD back to his 2ft tank and the tetras and smaller cichlids back with the pleco in the 200 litre tank. every one seems happy again and dispite the damage, even titus (the JD) was alot more perky this morning. yay! i am going to save up for a larger tank for titus and get rid of some stuff so i can fit the tank in my house. dont like him in a small tank.:headbang2

my pleco did this to my oscar, they still do it every now and then but no serious damage happened to either of my fish.you might want to think about getting a different pleco if ur not too attached to it

poor jd, why dont you take all the fish out the 2ft and put them in the 200litre then put the pleco in the 2ft'er
ive never herd of a pleco fighting but i have heard of them suckin the slime coat, which is realy bad.
GL anyways:)

pleco is 35cm ( i think ) close to it anyway, so i wont put him in the 2ft tank, to big & wont be able to turn around:eek: , the JD will eat my others,he has done this in the past, little bugger but he is healing nicely in his old tank, his tail is stuffed tho, i hope it will go back to normal.
