Jack Dempsey Sexing

Hi, I have 2 jack dempsey chiclid and I’m hoping if someone can help me sex them as initially I thought one was definitely female as it has the large blotches on the gill plate but the other also has some markings so maybe both female. Any idea from the more experienced would be great.

I would guess both are males. Neither of them have the give away blue beard that females only have.



The one on the left is a standard JD female. You can see all the extra blue under her eyes, sweeping back to her gills. No just more dots but looks like the skin is actually blue.

Thank you that does make sense comparing the photos , when I originally picked them I based it on the usual points of which ones appeared dominant in the group and showing colour, i guess il have to wait a bit more and see if it becomes obvious ?

I would agree both males. With females the whole throat is more blue.

Just posting a 3 month update, what do
You guys think still female? I’m seeing more blue behind the jaw line than I thought a female would have??

My money is still on male. Female would have much more intense bearding. If you want to be 100% certain, try to get a vent pic.
