I am new to the forum concept and have a delima. ....I just aquired a nice 85 gallon with a large jack and a smaller female. What are any takemates that would survive.

A small school of Silver Dollars (like five or six) and two Firemouth if not planted; if planted I would go with one pair (better if paired-off ) of Angelfish with at least two or three mid-sized catfish that can take care of themselves, like the Giant Upside Down Catfish. I would consider a school of already adult (say 4"+) Red Line Torpedo Barbs.

I have three JDs that measure somewhere between 7 to 8" giving my 12 and 14" Tiger Oscar pair some tough time whenever they get close to the paired-off JDs territory (in a six footer tank); the JDs dislike also a lone 4" Convict I keep there.

I have not observed any problems with the Severum, Silver Dollars, Angelfish, Giant Upside Down Catfish, and Firemouth that share that tank.

do you plan on breeding the JDs? if so, yob might want to consider just letting them have the tank to themselves, plus maybe some dither fish . . . if you want larger tankmates, just be sure it's something tough enough to take care of itself, but not so tough that it threatens the JDs

some additions I would consider: 3-4 Rainbow cichlids, pair of Firemouths, single male Convict, single male Carpintis, single male Salvini

If you are not planning on breeding I would suggest either a male convict or maybe some firemouths. If you decide on a convict you defiantly want a male, in my recent personal experience, and from what I have read female convicts will almost always spawn if a male of any species shares the aquarium with them. My female spawned and ever since she is extremely aggressive and dominates my GT and FM who are both males.

If you want to breed I would agree 100% with this
