finally got them to a place I’m happy with
Thanks guys for all the advice.
I will leave him in the front tank for now and see how he goes, if I do change the substrate, will it affect the other fish and do I have to remove the sand or pour the dark on top?

LFS has a beautiful jaguar 
6/7 inches, can I add that to my community tank or will it murder everyone?

As for substrate, I’ve had success lowering the water level, pulling substrate out, and replacing it with new. That was gravel though, not sure how well it would go with sand.

Quick update. JD is loving life in the front tank!
I’ve bought some floating plants for the other tank and will put them in. Going to wait for the JD to get to full size then I might put him back in and see if he keeps his colour.
