can any one tell me about jack dempseys .i got a male about 8 munths a go he is about five inces .and have read a lot of things about them . but wen any one walks in to the room were the aquarium is he just hides or wen i put food in he wont come out till i am gone is this normal i have heard of this fish eating from your hand it is pointless haveing a jack dempsey if you cant see one.if any one has the same problem or is it just my one thanks :D

Some JDs are shy and others run out to the front of the tank for food.

My current 2" JD goes crazy when I enter the room, and eats like crazy. It all depends on the temperament of the fish.

have you got some target/dither fish like gaint danios ect? if not it will make the JD more to chase them.
i had a male and a female in a seporate tank so i could raise them without breeding at a small age, they were quite shy but when they paired up in the 120 they are glass bangers:) and eat alot

I have two females in my tank and they are my prize fish :)

I absolutely love them! Very friendly fish that are always out and about (one is slightly more shy than the other - one is actually only gets shy when she see's the camera come out)

Have gotten to have mine eat some frozen food out of my hands - that was really exciting as they used to be too nervous to do that.

I would say time and patience.

Like others have said, each fish has their own personality. I had a very shy midas/rd, but I found that if I stuck around the tank enough he would come out of his hiding spots. I would just sit in front of the tank and read a book or something, and eventually he got used to me, and now I can't get him away from the glass when I am near.
