I have a JD that is around 6". I'm pretty sure that it's a female going by the spots all over the bottom half of her gill plate. She's the dominant fish in with a 4" FM, 4 1/2" GT, and some other fish including Pleco's and Cory Cats.

She hasn't developed any distiguishable coloration anywhere else except her fins and gill plate. :( There are a couple faint spots here and there but nothing consistent with what I've seen from owners on this forum. SO... is this normal? I've had her a little over a year, she acts normally, eats well etc. I feed her a varied diet, earthworms, krill, Hikari Gold pellets, frz brine shrimp, so I don't see nutrition as the problem. It's my first JD and I'm thinking I should wait it out, but its getting frustrating. Will post some pics soon too. Add some vegetables to her diet maybe?

Opinions?????? Thanks!

in my experience with JD's, females always develope coloring later then males

i have a 6 1/2 inch female and she is JUST now starting to get more visable speckles, it's nothing to worry about

WHEW Cool. Was beginning to wonder. I do 30-50% water changes every weekend, so my water is in good shape (I have tested it), so I can pretty much eliminate water parameters as a possible cause, along with Diet and stress. Diet is good as described in my last post, and stress, well...she rules the tank.

Gotta be patient I guess. But I saw a thread yesterday where someone had pics of an outstanding 3-4" JD that was covered with color, so I got a little worried. That post was "Help Sexing a Jack Dempsey" by Ben&debbie---beautiful JD on that thread WOW!

Will take some photo's tonight

Thats odd... My female had BEAUTIFUL bright blues, greens, reds, and yellows at 3"

is it possible I got one from bad stock? Maybe a poor breeding program or something? The LFS I got her from has a very good reputation and my GT looks fantastic. Bought them the same day

Ok I tried to get a couple of pics this morning before heading to work and the little b**ch played peek a boo for half an hour. Gonna try again at feeding time tonite. :irked:
