Hello,

A friend is about to give me a few convict cichlids and a “large” Dempsey... I just wanted to makes sure my current açaí/peacock cichlids, and 5 inch long bichirs will be okay with their new tank mates. I also have a few neon tetras and danios that can easily be moved into one of my smaller tanks. I’ve tried to do some research and keep seeing that they have a middle level of aggression or that it varies from calm to out right mean... so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Best to not mix continents-
Differing requirements, differing ways of expressing aggression.
The small fish will be food.
For your convicts and JD- think 75g- and that’s without your Malawi’s

I’ve mixed some different continents in the past and sometimes it works out ok, sometimes it doesn’t. The best thing to keep in mind are water requirements. Ph can be pretty different depending on the fish.

the only problem would be the tetras and danios, in the long run I think they will all get eaten one after the other.

Water requirements can differ, but if you are not buffering your tap water and are the fish are all from the same area (living in same tap-water) this becomes a non-issue. Diet requirements are different, but all these fish can live healthily on a quality pellet like new life spectrum.
How big is your tank? That is the #1 factor which will determine whether this will work out. The danios and tetras will probably be eaten, I would move them to other tanks. In a large enough tank, you may be fine with the acai and peacocks mixing with the CA cichlids... in anything below a 75 gallon I would say it will not work. I think my biggest concern would be the convicts, they really are mean little buggers.

Water requirements do not differ for either the Centrals or the Africans, they are all hard water fish.
The Cenotes in which JDs are endemic are basically collapsed lime stone sink holes, and most rivers the convicts come from are also alkaline, similar to the rift lakes.
The aggression issue could be more of the problem, but not insurmountable in a large enough tank.
In the video below the large lime stone slabs are everywhere.
