My big male BG Jack Dempsey has bred with a female from YankeeJack YankeeJack and are currently guarding tons of eggs. I wasn’t expecting them to do this so soon, but it’s awesome to have them doing this so soon. They are in my growout tank with a few small Green Terrors and two Cory Cats, but have claimed one of the medium terra cotta pots as their domain.
Due to the dim lighting, the pics are not the greatest, but there are too many eggs to count. If the eggs and wrigglers don’t get eaten in this, their first attempt at being parents, then the plan is to move the babies to another tank that is yet to be setup.

So awesome! Great pics! Can’t wait to see how the spawn turns out! Should be 25% EBs. IF the male has any Gold/leucistic lineage, you could get golds and plats.

I can never get enough of a beautiful JD, and good luck with the spawn

So, my male is a first time No-Go at this station. All of the eggs turned white and were eaten by the female. I’m hoping he does better after a little practice. They’re still guarding the pot, so they should try again fairly soon.

Jd do better on a flat rock that the male can pass over for spawning, grats on the first spawn, love to watch fish spawn, hate dealing with the fry, first 2 times or so fine, make sure to put a filter sock on all inlets of your filters or they will get sucked up and become feeding stations per say for the fry.

I’m going to have to put some slate down for them. I think he’s just too big to get into the pot and pass over the eggs.
I didn’t think about putting something over the filter inlet. Thanks for suggesting that, it’ll be done prior to their next spawn.

One of my first spawning success was jack dempseys over 40 years ago and that got me hooked on cichlids.

So, after giving them some slate and big rocks to use, the female laid about 6 more times. Each time my big male JD failed to fertilize and every one of them turned white. So, I moved him out and replaced him with the other male that I have. She laid this past Sunday, 5 August, and to say the least, my hopes weren’t high. I check the tank yesterday before going to bed and all of the eggs were gone except for a few white ones. I figure that it’s his first shot at this no big deal, they must’ve eaten them. I check on them this morning ad notice a fuzzy mass in one of the pits dug by the adults........ Wrigglers! She’s guarding them and the Male is swimming around the edges. Hopefully this batch is a success. Since I have moved and now have a fish room, the plan is to move the babies to a 10 gallon then to a 40b and eventually to a 75 if there are any keepers.
Looks like my project is finally kicking off. Thanks again YankeeJack YankeeJack
