Yesterday I got a couple of jacks from the lfs in town. The owner said that it was a female and male. Which I agreed with because one was paler than the other. When I first put them in the tank they flared their gills at each other and pushed each other back and forth locked at the mouths. However, since then the male of the group has just sat on the opposite side of the tank. And the female stays under some drift wood constantly. When ever the male goes over there he is chased away. Should I move them into a smaller tank, did I maybe get two males or something. Any info would be greatly appreciated. :feedback:

that last part, always go for a bigger tank

I can take some pics of them but how do I get them into the thread? Have them in a 75 gallon tank right now with a fire mouth and texas. Male and female both about 5 inches or so.

How big are they? You really don't know how fish are going to be untill they have been in the tank for a week or so.

To sex the fish you will need to look at the sex organs to know for shure.

That is not how you sex a Jack Dempsey, as far as Cichlids go more pale fish is usually the fish that is stressed out. I believe in Jack Dempsys its mainly the coloration and the fins, its pain in the ass to sex them I could never sex correctly my own fish. If you get pictures perhaps some guys here will help you out.

Mainly you should give them some time, I don't know jack about jacks but except for guppies (horny little boogers) any fish will need to get comfortable before courting behavior occurs.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I can definitely tell that I got a male and a female by the spots on the gill plate. They are starting to show signs of breeding now as well. Just had to get relaxed in the tank I guess.
