I got a juvenile jack dempsey last saturday. He has been extremely shy (I'd only seen him once in the open, other than that he's hiding behind the java ferns) and has yet to eat. I put 3 skirt tetras with him on sunday to act as dither fish, but they didn't work. One of the skirts was a female, and was scattering eggs. The tetras were eating them, and occasionally the jack would grab some. That's the only reason I wasn't too overly worried about him not eating, but that was on sunday/monday.

Going on 7 days, and he's yet to eat. I tried frozen mysis shrimp, frozen blood worms, and NLS cichlid pellets. The NLS pellets literally rolled on top of his head, and landed in the sand. I was thinking of trying some hikari or omega one pellets, but I'd rather have all my fish on the same food.

In the last day or two he has seemed to come out several times, but still isn't eating and is nowhere near as active as my firemouth.

He's in a 20g long growout alone with 3 tetras, temp @ 79f, with an AC50, of which I used the media from one of my filters on my 29g. He did seem to suffer a small injury when he was being netted (the small white spot you can see on that picture taken when I got him) but has since gotten smaller and is nearly gone. I'm hoping he was just recovering from the injury and will start coming out and eating, but looking to see any of you dempsey owners's opinions.

Usually when dempseys are that dark they are stressed. I recommend feeding with the lights off or in the evening. Just because you don't see him eat doesn't mean he isn't. Let him hide, they are a overall shy species IME

I have the same experience with a JD. For the first six months or more, I did not see it take pellets. It occasionally take on brine shrimp, a gulp or two. But not as voracious as others. He is the biggest in the tank. One thing I notice is that its stomach is not really thin, so I guess it tries to eat when I am not around. JD is a hardy fish, so I would not worry about it. Just monitor its belly and just try to leave some extra foods when feeding. Also, jacking up the water temp would also help fish take more food.

Yeah, it seems that way. I guess for him to be active I'd need a 125+ with multiple jacks and other CA/SA cichlids. Don't think he'll work as a "wet pet".

Well, going on 10 days, he finally ate. He's been eating for the last few days, and has started to liven up. I removed the skirt tetras and have a festivum in there temporarily, so I think that helped as well. I also added some "caves" for him and he's really started to warm up. I'm hoping with him in the living room of our house that he wont be as shy as most jacks because of all the activity, and so far it's working ok. He's starting to approach people when they stand near his tank and investigating objects left near the stand.

He's also nowhere near that dark anymore and his blue "spangles" are really coming out!
