So I've had My JD for a few weeks now and he gets some pellets and maybe a bit of flake. And blood every weekend. So he's about 3 inches, will he be able to eat worms and crustaceans or stuff like that. I feel like he needs more variety in his diet plus his colour(when he is not being feed) is bland. So any ideas

They need a good varried diet and it sounds like you are doing that. Keep quality pellets as the main food. Also good water quality and ph help too. They don't always have good colors when young but grow fast.

I have snorkeled with them a number of ties in cenotes in Mexico, and it seems the majority of their diet in nature is algae and detritus, with an occasional insect that falls in the water, and a live bearer fry. They constantly try to eat the thousands of livebearers that surround them, but very seldom succeed, it they make 1 out of every 10 attempt, I believe that is optimistic.
So I totally agree with cichlidfish that quality pellets are a great choice, and many times, beauty comes with age, and lots of water changes.

they grow very fast, mine seems to enjoy raw shrimp every now and then, it makes their colors come out more
