My male jack is sensitive to light. At first when the lights where on (I really didn't look at the tank other wise) I thought he was just getting lethargic and lazy, but then I saw him swimming around all happy like after I turned off the lights. I tried several different brightness and the only light he didn't completely run away from was a dim ambient light. Is there anyway to stop his sensitivity?

Substrate is a mixed tan, it's not a very dark color. The background is a those painting things. That's really dark.

Ok. So it's not either of those then. Mine freaks out and hides when I turn on the lights but that because I have white sand and no background.
Does he have plenty of hiding places?

I don't know then. Maybe he's just really shy. The only other think I can think of is maybe your water parameters are out of wack?

I'm going test ammonia when I get back, but my ph is always low around 3.5 from the tap. So maybe I didn't add enough ph up. The nitrates are about 10ppm and the nitrite are zero.

3.5 is a very low pH, that's close to the same acidity as lemon juice.
If accurate, not a great pH for JDs.
In nature JDs hang out in sunlight, but always have a dark crevice to dash into.
They are also surrounded by hundreds of mollies and other dither types, they watch to help judge vulnerability. Maybe you need some ditherers?

I remember that the previous owner had to get a special filter on the drinking tap so it's not rotting our teeth, but there is none for the outside tap. I use proper ph 8.2 to bring it up to about 7. I just checked it's 6.5 and the ammonia is 0.
Adding some dithers really brings out a skittish fish.

I have a convict and it helps a little, but most small fish get eaten.
