I have 2 tiny jags that are growing up fast in the 55 gallon grow out tank in which they are currently housed. They are still less than 3", but are already getting really aggressive.

Tomorrow I'm picking up a 125 gallon (72" L x 18" W x 22" H).

I will not be keeping both jags. It appears that I have a male and a female, but they are still young and it is difficult to tell.

My question: what can I stock in the 125 gal tank with a single jag? I've read a lot of really different opinions, and while a single "wet pet" is okay, I would prefer a tank mate or even a few tank mates if the tank can support it.

If I am adding a tank mate(s), I want to get them now, so they can all grow up together. I have experienced this to really calm aggression in aggressive fish.

Additionally, there seems to be a lot of disagreement as far as the level of aggressiveness between males and female of the P. Managuense. I know females don't get as large as the males, but I've seen first hand a female jag destroy other fish larger than herself.

Any thoughts, concerns, opinions, even constructive criticism would be gladly appreciated!

I had a single female jag in my 125 (same dimensions you listed) with an Oscar and a pleco. They usually didn't bother each other, but whenever the jag would go into spawning mode there would be some pretty serious aggression (lip locking...never any major injuries though). The oscar always tried to get to her eggs but she defended them pretty bravely ;)

They grew up together too...

I considered an oscar, but I'm leaning more towards a CA biotype tank.

I'm not able to view that pic (says I'm not an MFK member ?) but I def. like RDs.

Off to inspect the 125...wish me luck!

You have heaps of options with tank, ates for smaller Jags.
As mentioned Red Devil or Midas, Festae or any other aggressive ca cichlid it just depends on each fishes personality.

I'm still trying to learn the new world cichlids...seems to be more options and variables than with the old world cichlids.

Any thoughts on adding another parachromis species or 2 (like, say a red tiger mota or a freddy)?

These are some fish I have some interest in. thoughts?

-Vieja Argentea
-Herichthys carpintis ‘Escondido’
-Petenia splendida
-Convict

I wouldn't try another Parachromis, cause the more alike the fish are the more aggressive they are with one another.Like somone mentioned earlier I'd try other CA's with similar aggression levels. On second thought You might get buy with an RTM or freddie if it is the opposite sex of the Jag.

I understand one small Jag looks lost in a 125, but by 12" it will be an awsome fish in that tank. Tank mates are always hit or miss depending on the individual fish. A female RTM is a beautyful fish but will be so much smaller than the male jag he could kill her if he becomes too aggressive. You could try an Anphilopus somthing that will get big enough to hold it's own. Put in some good hiding places so each fish can clame it's own turf and see what happens. I don't recomend a male Trimac, mine is a syco head hunter (his name is Trimacasaurus Rex) and I've never seen a mellow one!

I think you would be okay with these 3 that you listed, at least for quite some time.

-Herichthys carpintis ‘Escondido’
-Convict

As they get larger you may have to get rid of one or two but by that time you should have a good idea of which fish you prefer and which need to go.
