New to jags and had a few question concerning their behavior. Mines currently about 4" and is normaly friendly and always at the front of the tank when I walk up. My concern is whenever I have company he goes nuts and shoots all over the tank and wont come out for a week after workds. Also shoots out of his hiding spot and in again like he's nipping at something but nothing is there. Its freakin' me out.lol Oh and also does this vertical float thing and darts up and down then goes and hides again. This is the most insane fish behavior I have ever seen in my 10 years of aquariums. Any guidance would be apreciated.

P.S 12g tank, ph 7.5, 78 degrees

, a 12 gallon tank. Upgrade immediately dude. Are you sure he has enough space to hide in.

Some fish are just skittish, I'm sure it'll calm down the longer you have him.

yea, even at 4" it should have more than 12 gallons. He's probably stressed

Some jags are kinda shy, mostly when young. Try a bigger tank.....4" is usually when they start to come out....

My 3 are the same size and the are also always the center of attention, and not skittish at all, but I have a 6' tank. Man though, 12 gallons, thats like you livin in a refrigerator box

12g is small and agree'd. Its not his normal home just temp for now had to cycle his real home over again after a small mishap and a lot of p***ed nieghbors.lol So what you all have said it has to be the small tank size indeed. His soon to be home is 75g so think he should come into his/her own. Thanks for the help, that was quick.lol

Tank size aside, I see similar behavior with my Jag and JD's with respect to their level of shyness. When I walk into the room they all flock to the front right corner like a pack of wolves. When company is over, they all hide in the corner-the moment company is gone-they are back out again.
I swear my Jag has the same personality as my cat.

Just an update I added a little buddy cave with a small plant and he seems very happy swimming in and out of his new log. Starting to get his spots in and loosing the stripes which seems good and he wont stop pooping.lol

Also had another question. Does everybody go with the canister filter on their larger tanks or am I able to use a trickle filter? With the same results? Just trying to understand all this.lol Thanks again

by the time that jag's around 7-8" (and in a bigger tank ;) ) it probably won't hide from anything. instead it'll most likely be flaring at and trying to bite your company. :D
