i recently introduced a male to my female jag and they hit it off. lately the male has been pushing her around and focusing more on a smaller female in the tank. this one is around 4 inches. is that normal for him to go after the smaller one rather than the older one? is 4 inches to small to lay eggs? shes twitching and dancing around and biting all the rocks and what not. what do you guys think?

My female started laying eggs at about 4 -4.5" but it will stunt her growth. If you want them to breed I would bump the temp up to about 86, do a couple of big cool water changes and feed them frozen krill or market shrimp

My female started laying eggs right at 4'', They are large enough, as stated above me, when I also did a 50 percent water change my temp lowered from 82 degrees to 74 they breed the following day, they tend to go off of water changes, more specifically water temp drops and when it goes back to normal, I also had 3 now after mine had paired off they were extremely aggressive towards the odd one out.

do a cooler water change and bring it back up to its norm overnight, its always worked for me. just be aware mine have breed consistanly for the past year, around 8 times. I think it really does stunt its growth

it most definitely stunts their growth. and they love the smaller ones for sure. when put together my male was 4 inches and female was 3. now female is only 4 and my male is about 10 inches. ive always had that happen in my experience. they will start digging around and moving stuff in a group and cover their eggs. they do best in caves. or clay pots. she started breeding at about 3.5 inches. anyway i would say def do what loshmitchell101 said and water change with cooler water and let it come back up overnight. but not too cold. sudden drastic changes can cause stress and shock. temp is best set around 82. also when you fill the tank do it with a watering can (clean only for fish tanks) to simulate rain. nothing works better to make fish get busy than fake rain lol. even if you fill with a hose if you let if fall a few inches to make small splashes in the top they love it. keep asking questions if you have them. no harm in that. and keep us updated on your progress.

thanks everybody for the info. when you say it stunts their growth, does that mean the female or the male as well? i want my male big.
