Hey I have a Jag that is now 5 inches and i had him for almost 2 months. And for some reason he stay almost entirely black but when i feed him live food he lightens up to normal color im guessing. Is him stay black a sign of stress???

I have the same thing going on with my male and female, but what I think is its them camouflaging themselves in the darker parts of the tank they hide in.

Are yours hiding in the dark? or in a dark area? Mine arent stressed at all. They are opportunistic feeders so I think its just part of their nature to blend in so they can grab smaller fish as they go by.

Before I had the hiding places for them, they werent dark at all.

i have 3 in a 55 the runt is about 2.5" and the other 2 are around 4-5" and the runt is always black .. do to the stress of the other 2 ..

and the others change color all the time .. but are almost never really dark

like everyones saying, it could be the tank location or water parameters, or heck even the temp. is the tank really low, below waste level? that used to freak mines out, also when the water temp was too cold. high traffic areas, do as well. try putting in more places to hide, all the things i've mentioned happened to my Jag, i put a flowerpot in there and after a couple of weeks, he eased up.

oh ok well i just did a 50% water change and have to back of the tank loaded with hgiding place and surely that is where he stays, but hopefully he will come out soon
