Hi there.

Anyone got any experience of SA Cichlids cross breeding.
I've bred many pairs of Cichlids such as Angels,Kribs, Convicts, Oscars, Dovii & Jags.
But never experienced anything like this.

My Male Jag that has bred with my female Jag about 8-9 times has paired up with a female Dovii in the same tank!!
She is a proven breeder also as raised 2 lots of fry with her male counterpart who she actualy killed :(

Anyway they are displaying proper spawning behaviour, she has cleared a big area of sand underneath a large piece of Bogwood & the male Jag is outside defending it from all comers! The female Dovii even has her egg tube protuding!!

I'm assuming that if she lays eggs that he wont be able to fertilize them?
My Biology A level days are a long time ago.
Would be stunning fish if they where fertile :headbang2

since Jag and Dovii are closely related -- they are both in the parachromis genus -- they can definitely cross ... don't think there would be any value to doing it, most people typically prefer the pure version of either fish

but there is a very strong chance that eggs from the Dovii could be fertilized by the Jag ...

For sure, it is 100% possible, as long as both fish know what they are doing... My Dovii and Loisellei have just spawned actually. This will be the 3rd time haha

Well they both know whatb theyre doing!
The male has successfully spawned with the female Jag about 8-9 times now.
Poor female doesnt know what's going on- she's been dumped for the dovii.

Have had 2 succesfull spawnings out of the dovii previously as well so they are both proven breeders.
Well see, male Jag is no longer protecting the site but female Dovii is still fiece & under the bogwood the whole time although she's also laid eggs on her own in the past.
Watch this space....

don't know how they will look when big, but show promise...
around here, hybrids are frowned upon, apart from the novelty of some mixes.
LFS gives max $6/fry, for under 2" $2
