So I picked up this 4" female jag about 2 1/2 weeks ago. She's been very aggressive since putting her in the 220 with a Carpinte, Cr. Johanna, & a flowerhorn. Yesterday I added a Cr. Sveni & Cr. "Belly Crawler". I noticed a reduction in aggression amongst all the fish by adding the new pikes. My girlfriend and I went to my parents for Easter this morning and upon returning this evening, I noticed that someone had been busy excavating the gravel in the corner of the tank. This is what I found...

Is it normal for a juvenile to lay eggs like this without a partner? I've had a few managuense, and never seen this before.

It happens on occasion, if you just recently got the fish they may be fertilized!

Um, I was always under the impression that the eggs were fertilized externally???

depends on the species of fish, this is the case with jaguars.

ok so i dont get it here, jags are hermemphdit??? anyways atleast u now u have afemale

no jaguars and many many species of female fish grow eggs inside, and lay eggs, but without a male to fertialize the eggs they will never hatch into fry. Female jaguars are ussally very easy to sex by there distinctive markings and lighter colors.

many species of livebearers and other fish have internal fertilization. AKA same action with human's.

Wow, I though my Big 10 education in biology had led me astray there for a minute... I was always pretty sure that livebearers were the only fish to fertilize internally. Ewurm had me freaking out for a minute!

i don't remember if there the only ones, so i can't tell you livebearers are the only ones, but from what i've owned, seen, and experienced, they are the only internal fertilizers i can think of.

I'm pretty sure you're right on this one XR.
