hey all

Sorry if this has been asked before - but what is the minimum tank size for a jag? Getting a 75g, wondering if it would be possible to keep a jag in there, and if there would be room for tankmates?

G

75's alright for females which max out from anywhere from 11-14", male jaguars hit 15-16" easy, so a 75 just doesn't give enough space for them to be comfortable, i'd recomend a 125, or at least 5-6'x18" footprint. and a 75 wouldn't give enough room for tankmates with a female

I agree. No way you will fit a Male comfortably in a 75 but a female might work out. Males need a minimum of as XR said 5 or 6 feet by 1.5 ft. Tankmates are out of the question when the female gets full grown in the 75 but I wouldn't see why you could put another smaller CA in there for the time being which will be about a year+ before the Jag gets full grown. I know people are going to say they will constantly fight but I have had more success with 2 big CA's rather than a bunch of them. My 125 has a 7.5" male Managuense and a 9" Barred Midas and they hardly fight at all. Only when the Midas comes near the Jags piece of slate does a fight break out and the Jag wins. The Midas used to win everything but now things have changed.

I think you can house the female in the 75 for a while with some other cichlids before it gets nasty. I have for a while now and she's approaching the 6 inch mark. Still no signs of aggression whatsoever. She has the temperment of a snook if you ask me. I don't think she has ever instigated a fight with any fish in that tank. Severum alwasy tries to fight her though. She just ignores him.

definitely try a female, I don't think that would be bad at all.

male jag by himself would be comfortable in a 75g, until he hits the 12" mark....

a female jaguar would do fine in a 75 might get a little cramped eventually but a male would need a bigger tank

I know i will probably get killed here, but i say that if you can get a nice healthy, colorful male he will be safe in a 75 gal tank.

Safe yes but healthy and happy I don't know. The space for swimming is too limited imo. A fish needs room to swim around and get it's excercise just like any other animal.

I agree as well as Imagine the water changes and maintnance you would have to do with a 15" Jag in a 75.
