Picked up this “yellow jacket” at my supplier. They had stupidly put him in a 4ft tank on his own with 7 Red Devils around the same size as him thinking it would be ok. Obviously they took him apart so I grabbed him up cheap and hoping to bring him back to his former glory with clean water and melodic treatment and general TLC. He’s about 6 inches and other than ripped off fins and a damaged gill plate in high spirits and good colours.
My question is can you tell if he is in dead a yellow jacket or maybe a jag?
Thanks

I would say with 95 percent certainty he is a full jag or parachromis hybrid. Perhaps jag/yj.

definitely not a full yellow jacket tho from what I have seen with them!

good luck with the rehab!

I thought that maybe the case shop seemed pretty certain but wasn’t 100%. I had a feeling jag which is fine. Just hope I can fix him up. My only concern is his gill plate but fingers crossed it re grows or changes in time as he gets bigger.

He does look very nice and such beautiful markings. In your opinion do hard rays grow back? I kept Africans years ago and would have fins regularly ripped clean off and grow back but this fish is the worse I’ve seen for sure.

What are the chances of the cartilage growing back in the hard rays part of his dorsal fin? It’s a young fish maybe 6 inches tops. Happy to carry out regular water changes and Melafix treatment.

Sadly, it's very unlikely the hard rays will regrow. The supplier should have just given you this fish as a rescue since they made the blunder that almost ended it's life. Very poor management. Anyone who has keep cichlids would know that adding a solitary fish to a 4' tank w 7 RD's is homicide 👎
