I've had this guy since he was about 1/2" long. He is now about 4" long. I was wondering if he is big enough to be able to tell the sex yet? What is the differences between male and female?? Thanks.

Looks like a male...

Ah..its very easy...male usually have a lot of spots shown on its body and the female usually only show the lateral lines or flowers across the center of it body..Hence, that looks male to me..I'll send pics of my Gold Jags pair if needed?

How are you venting the fish when you cannot clearly see the vent?

i was also wondering this.

anyone have an example of how the vent would look on a male/female?

I would bet female, however the fish is a little young to tell for sure. the rounded dorsal is a good indication. I used to breed jags but it has been ten years since i did it.

Males can and will sometimes retrain stripes. The best way to tell is that females usually have lateral spotting that they retain.

You cannot see the vent in the photo, so I don't know why people are saying they can sex it from the vent.

Mystix212 never posts helpful info and I ignore their posts. 93% sure female due to no nuchal hump on a 4" jag? WTF. Go learn something so your next 1,500 posts (in two months?) might have 1-2 intelligent things in them.

gokuson4 is right on.

Here is an egg laying female I had about that size. Note the lateral barring.

All of this controversy, and I still don't know what sex the fish is. I recently bought a few 1" jags about a month ago. I only plan on keeping one male. I would really know a reliable means of sexing a jaguar.
