jag tank size

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I love these stories of huge cichlids, bigger than people have seen in their lives, yet no pics. A 5 ft long 18 inch wide tank would comfortably house a solo Jag of 15-16 inches. Past that, an upgrade to a 180 might be in order. That being said, in my 23 years in the hobby I have rarely seen male jags get over 16 inches. I have seen it, but is rare even when kept as solo fish in large tanks.

lmfao
Ok ive had jags constantly for the past 5 years. I started with two babys i bought. Then i caught two in florida i have bred both florida stock and store bought stock. I agre once they reach fullsize a 100 gal would be to small. But In my experience It takes a long time for them to crest the ten to 12 inch mark. The one i curently have is left over from my fry from the florida stock its aprox 3 years old maybe little older . And its not 12 inchs long yet. Ide have to say for atleast three years or more a 75 to 100 gal tank would work more then fine for a jag. Ide even go as far to say you could keep a pair in there with no issues. just devide it once they spawn.

pics for proof, i have a female that's 14" and from my experience, that's BIG, i have NEVER seen a female over 14", let alone 16"- which 85% of males won't reach in captivity, rarely exceding 14-15".
I agree:)

NOOOO!!!
ALL people here says ,,,jags getting about 12"

better dont believe it,,because there getting much bigger.
but u all gonna see it soon,,as soon as my cam is back from repair

and i dont tape it from topside...just like somebody asked,,,but i will take him out,and put a measureline beside it,,so everybody can see it,,,how big they can be

guy on another cichlidforum has a female of 40cm=16" "real lengt"
i dont need to bluff ,that my jags are big,,THEY ARE BIG!

ONLY REASON THAT THEY DONT GET SO BIG SOMETIMES IS A SMALL TANK
A small tank does not cause this.It is water quality, genes and diet that will determine the growth of any fish.A small tank just means larger and more frequent water changes. The small tank only becomes a determining factor with lazy or poor husbandry which in turn will only produce poor water quality faster(hence the smaller tank getting the blame). Now I don't doubt the size of your Jags, but you have to realise that they are not the norm.I too have seen a couple of males around 18-19" but that is as far as it goes,a couple. Most I have ever seen, even in 240gal and larger tanks have seemed to max out around 14-15" and thats the larger end of the scale. Genetics also plays a role, not every fish can be a monster. In saying this ,we can only establish an average to work from and 18" whilst rarely being achievable is way above average.

My take on tank size by size not gallons.

5' x 18" x 20" Very minimum but doable
5' x 20" x 22" 2" each way makes a huge difference
6' x 18" x 20" on the same scale as the 5' x 20" x 22"(while it gains in length,it loses in width)
5' x 2' x 2' more than enough
6' x 2' x 2' overkill IMO for a solo jag unless you did attain 18-19"
