‘Allo all. I have some stocking questions for an up and coming Jaguar tank. I brought a tiny jag home (about ½ inch) from work the other day and, at the moment, he’s chilling in one of those 5 gallon bio orbs with a snail. I’ve got several larger tanks at my disposal (20l, 55g, 60g) and my plan is to move him into my 55g as soon as he’s big enough not to be sucked into the filter.

I’m aware of how big jags get and I’m not necessarily interested in a community set up, but I am looking for some type of bottom feeder and maybe a group of schooling fish for activity (which ultimately probably won’t work). Does anyone have a type of interesting catfish they can recommend that won’t outgrow a 60g? I’ve had pictus in the past and I enjoyed them, but I’m looking for something new. Also, do you think a small school of rainbowfish would be a bad idea? Thanks in advance.

I'm not trying to be negative but a 60 gallon tank isn't big enough to keep a Jag long term. If you don't plan on upgrading in the future, you should take the Jag back and exchange him for a another smaller growing guapote instead. You'll be much better off with a Loisellei or Freddy, maybe even a Mota but even those are pushing it.

I appreciate your response and your concern. I am aware that I will need a bigger tank and it's in my means to upgrade should the need arise...I just assumed I'd have a substantial amount of time before the 60g got tight. Am I wrong to think this?

Long story short, the little guy was living in a betta cup because he was too small to go into the juvenile jag tank. I'd like to keep him but if I feel I can't handle it, I'll make other arrangements.

if you want an interesting catfish, look into the Synodontis Eupterus or "Lace" Catfish. I have 2 in my 90gallon tank(check out the video/pictures) and they are amazing to watch. they will stay roughly 8" max and are highly active. if you are planning on upgrading your Jag tank in the future you can bring these guys right with him. i think 2 would work well in a 60g for now. not very good on algae though so keep them on a diet of greens and pellets. let me know what you think!!!!

Syn. eruptus are pretty neat catfish. I've got two fatties in my 120 that like to joust with each other over the same piece of decoration. I've also got 3 small synodontis hybrids (the ones that have recently been going around as "synodontis longirostris") in another tank, so I guess when it comes down to it I'm not short on catfish. I just wanted to see if someone would suggest something I haven't heard of.

What do you think about some kind of quick schooling fish with a jag? I realize that they'd probably just end up being expensive lunch...but I'm not opposed to that idea.

Thanks for your response!

*p.s. you've got some nice looking fish!

you should cut a small pvc pipe for your baby jag to hid in for now and as for the tank you can do what i did , i put 5 baby jags in a 55 with a airstone and bubbler at first and as soon as they were bigger and stronger i turned on the water filter , jags are tough lil fish and can survive harsh water conditions so you wont need the filtration at first . as for tank mates my jags and my oscar get along but their the same size almost . but there still babys at only 2 to 3 inches
