Need some suggestions for tankmates for a Jag. I don't have him yet but was planning on a Convict, Severumk, Firemouth and maybe a JD or Salvinia. Will be getting them at the same tme and same size. Foresee any problems with aggression levels?

Depends on the indivdual Jag. Most are more territorial than outright aggressive killers. Provide a large tank set up with separate territories so he can claim his spot.

I agree with balton777, they are not red devil agressive but they will defend their territory. Mine is not agressive at all and I have a Bifa, flowerhorn, convict, JD, argentea, bocourti in the same tank.

Im always bewildered at all the stories and advice that Jags are aggressive and need to be kept with other aggressive fish. I have had 5 (2 from rapps, 2 from Conkel & 1 of unknown origin), largest 9 inches, and Ive always had to remove them from my tanks because everyone whipped their ***e$...and I dont mean a fin nip or 2..I mean whipped up on them bad. They have all been hiders and completely submissive to other tankmates, which have included festae, friedrichstalii, trimacs & dovii, all equivalent or smaller sizes.

Im guessing that they were never able to establish territory, were just the passive ones of the bunch or that their aggression is most likely when protecting eggs or fry.

With that said, Id think any of the fish you listed would work until the Jag got bigger. They definitely are not scared to eat smaller fish...or to crap them out afterwards. They make an oscars bowel movements look like he was a tetra.

I recently purchased a 6" jag and added him to my community aquarium. I have a Severum that whips his *** a couple of times a day, at least. The Jag stays in a flower pot all the time.

Things are going to change and the Jag will want revenge:ROFL:

The fish you want to mix with the Jag are too weak. I have succesfully had Jags with the following:
Trimac, Midas, Red Devil, Black Belt, even Dovii-my advice is too grow out 3-4 Jags and stay with the strongest one that is what I do-cause if you get one and immediately mix them with Festaes or RD they get bullied a lot. In my experience Jags are kind of weak when small once they hit 6-7 inches then they start to show their true colors.

my jags were sissies till they hit 3-4". origanally they were in a tank (all juvies of no more than 1.5") an oscar, a sveni pike cichlid, 3 firemouths, and 2 juvies jags. the pike ruled the tank till his pigishness caught up with him and killed em. then the jags killed the fm's and the oscar ruled the tank.
