i just got 3 juv jaguar cichlids and planning to keep the best male, he's future tank will be a 5ft*2ft*2ft.
will i be able to put any other fish with him in that size tank and if so what?

If its only 1 Jag' you plan to keep in the 5Foot tank then i would say you can get a few other fish for the tank , depending on what fish you choose to get tho .

it all depends on the temperament of the jag. some are ok to have tankmates but most wind up being so territorial that they won't allow other tankmates. your best bet would be something non-cichlid that won't pose a threat to the jag. maybe some silver dollars and some type of fairly large catfish. whatever you want to add I'd do it quick and if you can try to get fish that are just a little bit larger than the jags. :)

i've kept jags with oscars, quetzals, dempseys, pikes, salvini and various cats but it doesn't always work if introduced as an adult,as that is when most cichlids get more territorial

thanks for the advice im thinking on trying some australian natives ox eye herring, berny's catfish and coal grunters etc on if i can find the grunters small ill get them soon but i might have to wate for the jags to grow first, since all these species are also extremly predatory and agresive.

ummm also it depends if u add the other fish b4 the jags and if they are a lil bigger or at least same size cuz juvie jags arent super nasty i raised my 2 from less than a inch and they were fine but then the alpha cichlid died and anarchy broke out. he choked on two rosies its the pike in my pic

i keep oscars, male festae, and male mayan in with my jag in a 150. i take the jags out only at breeding time to be safe. i ve had the jags in with the big boys since he was 4-5" compared to 10-12" fish already in the tank. also ive found if you introduce everyone together and as juvies there is virtually no problems.;)

Silver Dollars worked great with my jag, he has an issue with catfish that are larger than him but never bothers them that much. All his tank mates he's had were added after him and as an adult. Guess all Jags are different and trial and error will probably be the only way to find out.

:iagree:

It all depends on the personalities of each of those Jags for sure. I also agree with everybody with introducing them early on w/ other dither fishes (hopefully larger than them now). As for other cichlids, I always find it to be the luck of the trade if you can keep certain ones together. But yea try it out (sooner the better) but be prepared to be able to do some separation if needed.
