ive had male and female jag cichlids for about two weeks now and they seem to be very shy not the bold larger cichlid personalitys i thought they would have theyre still pretty small the male being 5 inch and the female 4 inches i know theyre still young and they might become braver with age and size but the oscars ive owned have allways been right at the glass wanting feeding even from a few inches
are all jags like this ?

thanks

how long have you had them? any tank mates?

My Jag can be very sulky for a few days when he get's moved but he comes back to life when he's happier. Not all Jags are confident and aggresive! my foot long jag submits and hides form his 4" gt tank mate!

im having the same problem with my 8" dovii. he moves around when im not there but as soon as he sees me he runs and hides. any help fr this?

theres plenty for them to hide behind but thats all they do,when they are out as soon as they see me they go mad and try to hide bashing in to logs and rocks ,
to be honest i thought they would be quite a personable fish much like an oscar so i would say im quite dissapointed by them so far

My jag is great, he always comes out to see what im up to, never really shys away. Try to dim the light a bit, i know mine prefers a sort of moonlight. If you want to make them more confident i say try feeding them crickets seemed to toughen my fish up. I hand fed him at only 3.5 inches he leaps out of the water to snag food, occassionaly he will catch my pinky finger and believe me you can feel his little razor teeth. Minnows and worms will also bring out the aggression/confidence. I find just being around the aquarium and cleaning it out once a week and feeding them twice a day seems to get them used to you. Do you have it in a place with little human contact if any? Do you have a backround on your tank? if not try that mybe, try getting him a clay pot thats what mine likes.

Anyways i hope he gets more social with you, because thats the main reason all of us SA/CA fans buy these big bruisers. Cheers

Dithers are your friend, Parachromis are top of the food chain for a reason. They are probably paranoid because there is nothing to calm their nerves in the tank with him. Google dither fish, there are some good articles about Para's and the need for dithers.
