hi everyone,

I bought a gorgeous jag. pair about 3 weeks ago, and both the male and females tube are OUT!! The females tube is huge. ( i was able to get pics of hers). They have both been cleaning a 12"saucer for about 5 days now.

I just checked on the pair, and the female is in the saucer and keeps rubbing her tube on it. ( she goes back and forth). The male follows right behind her. The only thing is that their are no eggs when she does that. I was wondering if this is like a practice run, if or if they are about to spawn, and the female is just getting ready. Thanks so much.

The males is 14-15", and the female is 10-11"

1st pic is of the male
2nd pic is of the female ( you can see her tube in this pic)
3rd pic is of the pair!!

Thanks MFK.

Man im jealous, can some figure out my jag problem. My pair is 6"male and 5"female. There tube been out for a week and a half now but they wont breed. There's a spot where all the gravel has been clear by one of the jag and a flat piece of slate near by but i dont think the male wants to breed. Sometime they stay close the female following the male, but he chases her away when she comes to his side of the tank. I can see that the female wants to breed but the male is resisting even with his tube out. Btw the female belly is HUGE likes it going to blow and it been like that for a week now, can something happen bad if she doesnt dispatch the eggs soon? Only tank mate is 1 growing peacock bass in there about 5" long that doesnt cause no trouble and actually runs away from them. I feed them live baby shrimps and night crawlers.

Your sounds just like my pair in the beg. My male and female did the exact same thing. My females belly is HUGE as well. She has been cleaning and picking out the saucer for about 2 days now, and both of their tubes have been out for about a week and a half. I think they just need time, but I am not to sure. My male did the exact same thing for about 1 week. He would push her to the other side of the tank everytime she went near him. For the last 3 days or so they have been showing off for each other. The male will flash his fins, and they will rub up against each other. The female is constantly with him, and he is always following her around the tank. Their is still a little pushing and shoving from the male, but that is expected, I guess. I would just give your pair a few more days. I hope they spawn for you. ;)

The only problem I am having with the pair is that they have been in the saucer for about 2 hours now acting just like they are spawning, but their are no eggs. I am hoping that they just need to warm up or something like that. LOL!!

good luck with your pair.

sexy couple lol.. the males spotting is very nice... i want some babies

thank you. I am not sure if you can tell by the pics, but right now the male is showing a purple tint all over his body. ( he looks really cool). The female is a bright gold, and is gorgeous. They are really great fish, and are a very laid back. They are not shy at all, and just continue on with their business like I was never taking pics.

good luck. nice jags

I still need some help. She is still in the saucer, but no eggs. The male is with her as well. I am not sure about what is happening. She has spawned like 5 times already for the guy I bought the pair from.

Should I do a 25-30% water change, and see if that will help?

Or turn off the tank lights. I have no idea.

Any advice is welcome.

You CANT make them spawn, but water changes always seem to help. I was reading an old old book about aquarium fish at the LFS and one thing the author mentioned was adding cooler water to simulate rain water temps being cooler than the water they were in. He said for him, it helped induce a spawn 90% of the time. I always knew that water changes did that, but I never thought to add cooler water and am curious to see if that helps. I cant remember the author and I called the store to see if theyd go get the book and tell me who it was and they said there is no book like I described...go figure. When I get the chance, Im going to go back and get the name. It was a big book and probably from the 60s.

Youre really stressing yourself out over this arent you?:nilly:

LOL!!! Yep. I was stressing out because I wasn't sure if she was trying to spawn, and couldn't, but both their tubes are back in now, so I guess the spawning thing will have to wait. :( I did a water change today, and I set their temp to 76 degrees and I normally keep it at 80 degrees. Thanks for the info.
