Hi,

I have a couple of baby jags ~2" that got into a tussle with a convict. The larger jag has a split about 3/4 down one of his pecs, but not to the base. I was kind of surprised by the splits. I've only had them for a few days. I need advice on what I can do to speed healing.

So far I've added stress coat to the water and done a 25% water change. They get a varied diet of tubifex worms, NLS, Omega One, bloodworms, spirulina flakes, brine/mysis shrimp, etc. I don't want to use melafix because for some reason the few times I tried it has killed my fish in the past. I'd show pics, but it's hard even for me to see and my camera is not that great.

Do you think they will heal?
How long will it take?
Should I add salt to the water?

I was sort of tossing around the idea of returning them to the lfs, but I'd rather not because I like the two I have. I'm hoping they're a pair.

Thanks!

api primafix and melafix work wonders

and clean water is the best remedy of all

Things like the "___fixes" that are based on tea tree oils rather than actual antibiotics.

There are some sources that claim certain benefits from those tea tree products (especially the manufacturer!), but those claims are largely anecdotal and scientifically unsubstantiated. I am aware of several veterinarians who are convinced those products are worthless. Without specific knowledge of their effects and side-effects one is just taking a shotgun approach and potentially adding stress to what may already be a stressful environment.

They're great for fishroom air freshening though!

Water changes and perhaps a little salt 1n the water to stimulate the production of slime. It should heal by itslef in a couple of days, nothing to worry about.

For fins, I don't even think you'd need the salt. Cichlids get into tussles all the time; their fins heal quickly in a few days as long as the water is clean and the fish are eating well.
