Some of you know that one of the lfs has been keeping a pair of my jags.

When I had them in a 120 they acted like they wanted to spawn but never had but within 2 weeks after I took them to the lfs they spawned in a 40gal tank.

Why post this? well I think it's strange that the fish that are very large are happier in the 40 then they were in the 120. Anyone else ever seen this before?

One thought is that the lfs is on a central system and they have a few other cichlids that have spawned and I wonder if there may be harmones in the system from the other fish. What do you think?

BTW if your in Indy stop by the Pet Warehouse and you can see them with their latest batch of eggs.........many hundreds of them.

How about if we just subtract 5 posts from his count?

Sorry about the derailing repair... hormones and water quality would be my guees.

I had an experience with my jags once simular in a way but I never switched their tanks... I had them in a tank with nothing but gravel and a few big rocks for decor but as soon as I put a couple thin slates in the tank they spawned...

So maybe they didnt have a surface they liked in your tank...

I know some times they will lay of the bottom of the tank glass but if it is coverd buy tank decor then they might not be able to get to it and there for they dont spawn!!!

wre there other fish in the 120?

it is likely the water is refreshed more often at the store
temp ph food could be anything check the store and compare it to your home

My water quality was top notch so maybe it was the hormones.

From what I seen with mine is they love to breed on teh slate...or bare bottom glass...they will clear an area out to thier liking and lay eggs....it looklike in the pics you posted of themin another thread it shows them cleared out the bare bottom of the tank and must have laid they eggs on the bottom....I am willing to but you put a few peaces of slate in your tanks they will breed in there....as far as teh water goes, I dont know....Mine are used to my tank water with just the filter, Iguess I have good water out the tap, they love it and everything checks out fine.....

If I was you I get the slate and sit back and watch....mine breed every @ 4-6 weeks.....I have some many left over I use them as feeders most the time cause they are so hard to get rid of or give away.....
