I have a 180g with a Jaguar Cichlid (6 inches) and a Texas Cichlid (5 1/2 inches) and a large common pleco. The cichlids have been together since they were babies, and have never been very fond of one another. Agression has never been extremely bad, but it seems like at least one of them is always missing a scale or two. I hope the jag will mellow with age.

My question is: What can be done to reduce agression/fighting? I am currently working on getting some more driftwood and decorations to add structure. Are there any cool fish I could add as dithers to make a more peaceful community? I know some aggression is to be expected as fish establish a pecking order, but I like to keep my fish as beautiful and happy as possible.

Thanks in advance.

Hi.

I suggest you add some more fish, as some lil' barbs shoal to distract the atention of each other of the bad boys, it may help.

If aression contines you might have to add an tank spliter a 180g sounds like a very big thank so even with an spliter they may have enough room for each..

How about some picts mate????.

lower your temp becaus eloweer temps equal lower aggresion

Thanks for the Ideas!

Lowering the temperature might be a problem without a chiller. The ambient temperature of the room is higher than any other in the house. My filter is a huge wet dry with an external pump, it seems to heat my tank to the point that my heaters only cut on on very cool days. Temps stay around 80, sometimes they drop as low as 78.

If I add fish, I would like for them to become permanent members, if possible, rather than expensive feeders later on.

How about some picts mate????.

Every time I try to upload pics, I just get an upload failed error. Never had this prob. before.

you could try a school of giant danios, silver dollars, bigger barbs.with only 2 fish in the tank, someone is gonna end up on the short end.you could try a larger cichlid? or a group of 5 small cichlids and see if they can co-exist.be ready to mix up the decor when you add them,be prepared to take out anyone getting to bullied

i would add another big guy to spread the agression, or a few tough medium sized cichlids to achieve the same goal. i always keep a larger parrot in my tanks to act as a sort of enforcer, works well for me. only problem is once the pecking order is established after adding him, i cant make any changes
