South Central...
I have a male jag (pretty sure) that I've had for about 3 years now. He's around 10 or so inches long and lives in a 55 gallon ( I know, I plan on getting him a bigger tank). I've been thinkings about breeding him. But he's never really been with another fish before. He's very aggressive and rams into the glass if you get to close to his tank. When he was about 3 inches long he lived with an albino oscar about 4 inches long and kicked it's @$$ the day I bought the oscar so I seperated them. My question: is it hard to get an older male jag to pair up with a female?

i did it with my big male but you will definatly need a biger tank and alot of hiding spots for the female, he might me realy mean but not ***!
oyea and hes a great looking jag!

yea he looks just like my male...just plonk her in there. my female was highly aggressive towards all other fish in my tank and when i dropped the male in there was hardly any conflict between them...they locked lips a few times and then they fell in love. just give it a shot you never know they could hit it off straight away

What size female should I be on the look out for? I guess I could buy a small one and let it get bigger and then put them together. Most of the LFS near me don't have large jags for sale.

Find the largest one possible, and be ready to separate them. I've found that larger solo fish are harder to pair. Are you planning on breeding them in the 55g? That wouldn't be a good idea.

Anyway, he looks great.

I doubt a female would survive in a 55g tank with him but if I were you, I'd find a female a few inches smaller than him. Install and egg crate divider with a hole only big enough for her to fit through, but cover the hole for now. Give her about a third of the tank (obviously this works better in the 100g tank). Watch them for a week or two to see how they react to each other. Keep the large flowerpot on the male's side and see if he cleans up around it for breeding. Feed the female well and if her tube drops or they generally seem interested in each other and not too aggressive, open the divider and see what happens. If he beats her, she'll just go back to her side till he calms down. If he continues to beat her every time she enters his side, it might not work out.

btw, great colors on that guy!

Chris.
