so i got a jaguar cichlid 10 days ago and it is in my 29 gallon grow-out. i know this tank is waay to small but it is only 3.5 inches and will be going into a 240. anyways, i am having some issues feeding it. it is somewhat shy, it doesn't hide that often but is skittish and kind of inactive. nothing like my oscar was like when it was a baby. When i got it, it took out all the dithers, (danios) in my tank. since then i starved it for six days and raised the water temp a bit. after that i feed it pellets and it looked at it and swam away. it has been doing this for three days now, so for nine days it hasn't ate a thing and is getting very skinny. I was worried it would starve so i gave it a cut up earthworm, and it ate it hesitantly though. It's a very stubborn fish lol. it's frustrating because i thought they were big eaters. do you guys have any suggestions on what to do? should i just not bother with pellets?

Mine is a very finicky eater. However, I found that he LOVES NLS. So, what I've been doing is keeping a container of fish fillets and chopped up shrimp covered with the NLS pellets in the fridge. Slowly he's been eating them more and more and yesterday he took plain fillets for the first time.

Imo he needs to be about 6" and have a bit of bulk to him before pellet training starts that way he can be starved a little without the threat of dying, I'd just feed him up on whatever he takes for now and get him confident in his environment that way once pellet training starts he'll be a lot less shy and more Likely to eat the food in "his" tank
Good luck with him whatever option you choose :)

smaller jag's tend to hide more and are very very easily frightened. I would stick with worms for a while until it gets weight and size on him. Tons of water changes and the worms will help its growth. Nls pellets are great once it has size on.
