Hi, i have an empty aquarium with a dimension of 48"l x 21"w x 21"h. Can it house a female/male jaguar cichlid for a lifetime? Im still planning to get one, if not suitable i will get an oscar instead.

You would have to keep them divided and I don’t think think you would find that to be a very interesting tank.
I wouldn’t want the female to have less than6 feet to escape.
My pair keeps other larger Centrals at bay in a 180- including a female bifa, male midas and an butterkoferi.

I will just keep one fish, i just want to know if a jaguar cichlid is suitable for that tabk dimension for life, if not i will just go for oscar

Welcome aboard
Dimensions of aquarium is too small for a male Jag or Oscar.

I would consider a smaller cichlid for that tank than the jag. A female would make it work, but a big male jag would outgrow it for sure.

I think a solo oscar would be fine if you were to provide the necessary care and maintenance to keep your water clean once the fish is full grown.

If it were me though, i'd go with a midas, flowerhorn, texas cichlid, or green terror for an impressive single specimen tank.

I've got the same sized tank, I nearly got a jag but in the end I decided it would be too small. All the LFS in town said it would be o.k but if you can see a full grown jag in person I think you would think the same thing, they are just too big for the 4ft length.

Can a jack dempsey be good alone?

I've never kept one but I don't see why not. You might need some mollies or something as a dither fish to give it confidence when it's small though.
I ended up getting a pair of salvini, they are beautiful but insanely aggressive so I got rid of them which I still regret. I will definitely get some more one day though.
