I have a jaguar cichlid question for the professionals because Im getting mixed info from the LFS I purchased what I understand to be a Managuese Cichlid. However today while shooting the shhit with the LFS worker about the 2 gargantuin Fangs my Jag has on its mandible he claims Managuese do not have Fangs where-as the Motoguensis do have the fangs. The funny thing is they have the same fish for sale right now just the opposite sex as mine I know sexing Jags is based on all spots or spots within arranged stripes mine is spotted theirs is striped So whats the scoop. He also told me the fact that my jag was so aggressive toward my larger Oscar and did so much damage is simply because it was Motoguensis not Managuese (which by the way I said "Id like to buy the Managuese you have in back" and he said "Motoguensis or Managuese? Moto is much going to killkillkill most tankmates" and I replied Mana because I have a much larger O with an additude problem just a few weeks ago my O shredded a pleco larger than him over night he bagged me a mature Jag which he now claims to be Moto as opposed to Mana since he found out it has fangs and maimed a very mean large O

Moto/Mana
Sexing
Fangs
and pretty much anything else

i'm actually almost positive all parachromis species get some nice teef.
my old female jag had some nasty teeth and scratched up my o's mouth and lip.

post a picture of your 'jag'.

you can easily see the differences between jags and motags through pictures.

All parachromis have teeth. A MOTA grows about 8", whereas jags can attain sizes of 18". Striped managuese=female, spotted=male. LFS employees are usually uneducated and uninformed. I suggest not listening to the advice these guys have and to come here for information.

uninformed - yess
uneducated - nooo

many of them do not have as much expirence as a lot of other keepers
but i wouldn't say they are uneducated.

dido on all that. also mota's generally have a red to them. the males slight red and the females often have a lot of red. Managuense more of a brown/gold/black hence the name 'jaguar'

Parachromis motaguense regularly reach lengths much greater than 8". I have a female motaguense bigger than that now that is barely a year old. All of the Parachromis species males are easily capable of eclipsing 12". Some will reach much larger sizes, even doubling that. Most of the females can come close to that 12" as well.

As to the original questions, I<3fish is right, all the species of Parachromis have teeth. They are not always visible because they get knocked out by their everyday behavior. They will be replaced and likely knocked out again.

As to one species of Parachromis being more aggressive than another, that's just something that can't be generalized, with the exception of the dovii, lol. All of the Parachromis are quite capable of destroying tankmates with utter indifference. It's more up to the atitude of the individual fish than it is which variety.

As to sexing managuense, the males will have a lot more of the spotting than females. But even this method of identification can be tricky until the fish reaches around 6" or bigger. Other times sexing them can be easy. Posting photos here and letting the experts weigh in is hands down the best way to determine sex.

I don't have any problem being open to what certain people at certain lfs say depending on the knowlege they display to me but in the end I really can only put it in the hands of MFK because the knowlage base is so extensive no single person (ESP a lfs worker not owner) can possibly rival the sheer numbers of people fully capable of providinga level of compitance that makes me respect the hobby more and more and this is what keeps me striving to educate myself as much as I can

Proud to be MFK.

by the way my ID of the was correct the specimen is 8" displaying bright gold dark black and configeration which leads me to belive it is a male managuese as opposed to a motoguense this being said I will post A photo just in case anyone is interested in photograph to go with all the great info everyone who helped me out listed.

i'm sure interested lol.

I think the problem with lfs employees stems from not wanting to look like a tard in front of a customers, so they just spout off some random stuff that might have some factual basis but for the most part isnt true:screwy:
In there defense, some of them just like fish and might not know so much about a particluar family or species. Its not like there is a bar exam for LFS employees:D

Parachromis aggression(and fish aggression in general) applies to a fish to fish basis. And the "Fangs" are CANINES that most carnivorous or omnivorous fish possess. Due to the size that some parachromis can reach espeacially Dovii and Manageunsis(jaguar) the Cannines seem large espeacially with there giant mouths.

A MOTAguensis or RTM is one of the smaller fish in the genus and can be just as mean or mellow as any Jaguar. Females are smaller than males and show a vibrant red pigment when in full breading dress.

sorry for such a long post hope it helps
