jaguar cichlid question

i just bought 4- 2'' jaguar cichlids for my 100 gallon grow out tank and one of them turned almost completely black after one hour. is that normal and/or healthy?

Totally normal, they do this a lot at the pet store but when they are comfortable and in a nice and big environment, their colors will return. I don't know if this is the same but a lot of cichlids change color when angry like the Pseudotropheus demasoni, they change color in seconds ( males ) when spawning.

Yeah its fine jags like other cichlids go through rapid and drastic color changes. Could be mood, stress or really anything. My 5 inch female jag was colored when I bought her then black when I put her in the new tank and then slowly turned colored again and after being colored for 2 months she turnede black two day ago and has been that way since. My brothers jag has been black for a few weeks at a time through the 6 years he's had it and never had any problems. Its probably just stressed. Hey maybee that's a female thing both mine and my brothers are both females anyone seen a male do this.

the jags are currently with 1-4'' oscar, 3-4'' red belly pacu (comming out tomorow), 2-5'' cat fish, one male and one female beta,and 2-5'' cat fish and they took controle of the tank 20 minnutes after i put them in.

the three pacus are going in an outdoor pond, two of the jags are going in a friends 300 gal tank and im keeping two jags for my 200gal thats on order

besides size differece when bigger, how do you tell the difference between male and female?
