Around.....
Okay so i saw some the other day at the LFS and been doing some research and was thinking about getting a few 4 or so and keeping them together and see if i could get a breeding pair. Would this work or should i just go with one?

THANKS!!

If you want a breeding pair, I'd go with 6 or so, this way you're almost guaranteed to wind up with at least one compatible pair.

What sized tank are they going in? For a breeding pair you'll need a massive aquarium. Even a lone male Jag should be housed in a tank with a footprint of no less than a 5' x 1.5' (roughly 100 gallons, depending on height). You'll probably also need a divider as males tend to beat up on their mate. At least this was my experience.

The Managuense is a beautiful fish; I'd recommend it if you had the tank space.

i have 180...but am keeping a few other fish in there. was gonna buy some inchers and raise them in the 70 gallon... then probably move them over. I think i will just go with one of them then.... :(

The guy know his managuense lol. Yupp Jags get pretty roudy as pairs. My male went through 3 females. His first female was way bigger than him but he managed to pester and nip her too much.... then he snapped and killed her.

A 70 will grow a jag out until about 10 inch or so beyond 10 inch as with any fish ( IMO) should be in a 6 foot tank. since you already have a 180 GO FOR IT!

Great fish.

Great fish.

so i could do 2 of them in a 180 or just the one?

id go for just one, if you had 2 theyy would either beat on each other or pair up and beat on the other fish. i would atlest think 2 females would work but dont quete me on it tho.

yeah i would go for one male unless you are wanting to dedicate the tank to them, a pair will fit in a 180 but will claim the entire thing for themselves one they are older and breeding, i would go ahead and grow out a couple of them in your 70g and then once they are big enough to sex, just add your favorite, best looking male to the 180 and re-home the others

maybe i will do that then...interesting. i'm gonna probably get one now, maybe 3 or more. and test this out...we will see... would the grow outs be okay with a silver arow, clown knife fish, 2 sens Small, a BGK, and 5-6" bowfin?

if you get them really small then they should be ok but once they get to 3-4in you may have problems (though it could go the other way and they could just focus on each other and ignore the others) just keep a close eye out and make sure they aren't small enough to get eaten by the other fish when first added

yeah it would be just them in a 70 gallon grow out. no way any of them could eat each other. or put the jag in the 20 and power feed till he is big enough...
