I am setting up a new Jaguar Cichlid tank. It is 70 gallons and I am trying to figure out the cheapest AND best everything for it. I live close to lake erie and can get rocks from there but am not sure I could use them. I want to maybe use Carib Sea African Cichlid Mix Rift Lake Authentic 20 lb substrate. I thought it would keep the PH at a good level but am worried because my Jaguar moves the substrate around quite a bit and it looks like it could cut his mouth. ?? What do you all think? I have two Marineland Penguin 350 Power Filters. I plan to put this tank in my living room so I want to keep it clean and not smell. Any suggestions would be very helpful. I am not that "fish savvy". I fell in love with this Jaguar and now I planned my whole living room around this tank. I had no idea what "cycling" even was and just threw the fish in brand new tank last time. Poor Mags!:WHOA: Anyway... any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I don't think it will cut the jags mouth but honestly I wouldn't get that gravel. Get a natural, inexpensive pea gravel and save the money. That is designed for African cichlids and your Jag is a Central American.

Thanks! I will consider both. The pea gravel sounds very cheap! I love the look of sand but since I am a newbie am a bit afraid that I won't be able to clean the tank properly with it. There is all this talk about trapped nitrates and stuff! If I get the pea gravel will my gravel cleaner work with it? I am not sure I am going to be able to keep a fish tank this size but I have to try! My poor Mags is in a 30 gallon tank and can touch both sides when he turns around right now! Monster fish are amazing!

If you like the look of sand, go for it. I have sand in my 240 and my 135. Sand is very easy to clean but you do notice every little bit of junk on it. I have pea gravel in my 80(my Jags solo tank) and he seems to dig in it a LOT more than he did when he was in a sand tank. Your gravel cleaner will work fine in the pea gravel but if you do go the sand route, it's easy just to take the hose right along the top and take the junk off the top of the sand. Very easy either way you go. Good luck! :-)

About the traped nitrates that only happens if u dont agitate it every now and then.... If u get pool filter aand it is heavy enough that u can still use the gravel cleaner atatchmentand it will act just like gravel.... That way u agitate itand you get the poo
