I currently have a 6” Oscar in a 55 gallon standard tank. I just recently put in a juvenile jack Dempsey (approximately 2”). My lfs has juvenile jaguar cichlids (same size as the jd) and I’m a big fan of them. Would it possibly work to add in a jaguar as well? Until they get larger of course, which time I would need to get a larger tank. Thanks!

Welcome aboard

The Jaguar Cichlid will be too aggressive for the Oscar and Jack Dempsey.

Just in case, but if your Oscar is picking on your JD, and later your JD reaches a larger size, the opposite thing might happen. I had a regani dwarf pike cichlid with a JD for a while, the pike would pick on my JD when the pike was bigger, but once the JD got to a larger size, it flipped.

Sometimes, with the right combination at the right size from the start, you can get these guys to co-habitate. With a 55 for life, odds are is you would lose the JD and Oscar eventually. If you get a 200+ tank you’d have a much better shot at it, but still no guarantee. Sex seems to matter as well, it may be easier to pull off a male, female, female than any other combo. It’s always going to be a dice roll though. Good luck.

I'd strongly recommend keeping fish in the 55 that can live in a 55 and wait to get the bigger fish when you have the bigger tank. So in this case, the JD may be ok by itself in a 55, but you should probably consider rehoming the O, and definitely don't add a Jaguar, which can easily hit 16+".
