For food, go with a good variety. Use a quality pellet for a staple. I like Hikari Cichlid Gold and BioGold. I also use bloodworms, market shrimp, tilapia and catfish filets, earthworms/nightcrawlers, meal worms, crickets, and live feeders (from my own safe breeding colony). For the larger foods like shrimp and fish filets, cut them into bite size pieces. The shrimp and feeders seem to pack on the most size. I wouldn't use feeders unless you are breeding your own though. The risk of disease and/or parasites isn't worth it.

As for growth rates, it can vary from fish to fish and will depend largely on the qaulity and frequency of feeding (and water changes). But a good average will be between 1/2" to 1" per month until they hit about 12". Growth will slow down a little once they reach around 12". 19" maximum length has been reported although I haven't seen many bigger than 15" in aquariums. I'm not saying they don't exist, I just don't see them very often. You can probably expect yours to hit 12" in the first year for sure.

Good luck and post some pics.

thanks a lot that answered all of my questions. i feed 3 times a day and change the water once or twice a week is that good?

When my jags were small, I fed them four times a day. I do a 75% waterchange once a week. What you're doing is probably fine although it depends on tank size and other fish in the tank. How big is your tank and what else is in there? Buy yourself a test kit test your water regularly. That's a better way to judge how often to change your water than just arbitrarily doing it once a week.

And you may or may not know, a single adult male should be in a 75g tank at minimum. As always, bigger is better when it comes to tank size.

thanks a lot everyone this is much appreciated i have a 55g with a jag, dempsey that is mixed with a salvini, a texas and a salvini all very small about 1 to 2 inches.. ive come to terms with the fact that my jag will prob kill all my fish so i figured once he gets bigger ill get a bigger tank or take them out.

thanks again everyone for you help
and ill be posting pics soon

hey i have a jag thats 6 months old and its between 6-7inchs long. hes in a 75gal right now all by him self and baby convicts. i cant keep anything with him. im savin up to get a 150gal for him. he had a fast growth spurt in the first couple of months. he hasnt really grown much in the last couple of months. i also just purchased a fluval FX5 for my 150 gal when i get it. i love my jag. my buddy has a dovii which is 8 months old and is around 9inchs long. hes in a 210 gal tank with a 13inch florida gar and couple of convicts. his dovii is awesome! amazing color!

He'll need a bigger tank whether or not there are tankmates. A 55g is just too small for an adult jag. But, you've got maybe six months til he outgrows that 55g. Check out your local craigslist, there are often great deals on empty tanks. Don't put it off, he'll be too big before you know it.;)
