Rn I have 2 jags in qt. For a 6x2. 3 questions is it normal for them to be finicky eaters? 2) I will pull them for vent pics. I just need confirmation I was right venting. Suspect 1 male 1 female. The male in question is more boisterous than the female in question already. 3 is it preferred a bit more subdued lighting for them? Or does it matter?

On lighting- most cichlids will be shy with bright lighting, especially when young. Once they are big they might not mind, but baby american cichlids are constantly in fear of being bird food, and will often hide under decor if there is not enough overhanging decor in the upper reaches of the tank, or the light is too bright. I find subdued lighting works best if you want the fish to be out and active; paired with the overhanging decor which helps them feel safe.
Here's an old setup of mine for example. Branches and fake or real plants in top half of the tank will go a long way in terms of making the fish outgoing.
