Question on if this stock would be OK. Jaguar pair in an 8 foot 180 gallon (96 x 18 x 24). Substrate would be PFS with large pieces of drift wood. Filtration would be 2 FX5's. Would have a decent size school of silver dollar / red hooks for dithers. When trying to get a pair is it best to buy 4 - 6 and see what actually pairs off or try to already find an established pair? Have the tank and one FX5 so far, still have to find another FX5 and build the actual stand, heaters and so forth.

I'd buy the 4-6 juvies and see what pairs off naturally. This way you get to see the fish as they mature and grow - something that I always enjoy doing verse buying an adult.

Is there anyway to keep from inbreeding with buying juvies? Buy a batch from one retailer and then another batch from someone else? Then just hope that a pair forms with one from each batch?

Could always buy 3-4, one from a different supplier. This would work out well if you have a variety of different LFS around you. Or if you have some local breeders.

if u want a pair i have a pair of beautiful stunning jags that are 1.5 to 2 years old they spawn every 4 weeks and have a strong bond

Uhm, You said in one of my threads you sold your pairs..

buy 4 from 2 different sources. id buy from somebody with a good rep if i planed on breeding that sp. i dont like breeding fish from lfs unless i know the supplier there getting from. 8 is a good number i think and you have plenty of room in that tank too. your chances of getting more than 1 pair is good. can sell them off and make all your money back and then some =)

The only down fall to buying several jags, and letting them pair off on their own, is that if you only plan on keeping 1 pair, it's gonna be hard to get rid of the others depending on your location since they are a dime a dozen.
