Hey MFK my baby jaguar has grown out of his 55 gallon and im now lookin to do a huge upgrade...ive found countless 150s for sale is that large enough for him and is a 135 good enough too? and a new potential female? and i want to start using sand any special sand should i use? can i use play sand?

Both 150 and 135 would work fine. If you find a 2' wide 150 even better. Far as sand your best bet is pool filter sand. Home depot and lowes sell it. If they dont have it then a pool supply store will. I paid only $5 for 50 lbs. How big is your jag?

he is gettin around 6 inches i feel like i shoulda swaped him into the bigger tank earlier i want his growth rate to be steady so i want him in a larger enough tank to not have a prob

He'll be fine long as you keep up on water changes. Just move him soon. Just to give you an idea. My male Jag is in a 110 and is about 1.5 years old and about 13". I do around 70% water change weekly. So your gonna try to find him a female? Wish I could breed mine, I tried but hes too aggressive.

1Bigdovii, You mean too aggressive for the set up you had, right? I yopu are serious about breeding them there is always a way. My favorite is the double flower pot route but I have had good luck with the incomplete divider too, as long as the female is smaller than the male.

Hes just insane he will not even let me put my hand in the tank durring cleaning without attacking.
The only problem with the divider method is he will tear himself up beating at it to get to the female, same with flower pots. I just have a unusually aggressive jag. Ive had others in the past that were no problem.

my male is calm, and relaxed. until theres fry in the tank. omg hes ripped through 3 large nets now. get 2 large females and let him chase them both around. sad to say but he will kill 1 and the other should end up his gal. thats how mine paired up. my male is 13+ as well. OP. anything over 100 gal can work but id select the widest footprint and do many waterchanges

Pool filter sand is better than play sand. It is heavier and doesn't compact. You can get it from pool filter stores for $13/50lbs. A 150g (5x2x2) is doable for a pair if you can keep up with the water changes. If you can get a 180g (6x2x2) that is better. You get an extra 1 foot.

IMO a 125 is pretty good. Of course a 2 foot wide tank would be great, so a 180. IMO that would be a big tank for them. A 150 is the same footprint as a 125, standard. A 6' x 18" foot print is a good footprint.

I have a 16" jaguar that's 6 years old and would recommend a 2ft by 6ft tank if possible. I've seen him in a 180g and thought that was bare minimum for him alone, much less a female. I have him and a 12-13" female in my 265g with other fish with no issues
