I know this isn't groundbreaking stuff but my male Jag just bred with my convict, and I have a few questions I was hoping someone could help me with. My first question is should I separate the mother and father? Its just them in a 30 gallon grow out, but neither fish has got the size to safely move to my 220 yet. The mother has gone from victim to victimizer since she laid these eggs and now has the jag completely across the tank against the glass while she diligently maintains the fry. For what it's worth I don't think he is much of a threat to the fry, since the fry hatched he has been very defensive about anyone coming close to the tank. He makes aggressive gestures if you approach and if you don't back up he goes into wild flights all across the tank. I also think he's okay with the distance he's kept at, the convict doesn't do any real damage, just comes over to peck him every so often. I am also a bit concerned about my cons head. She's got a white patch above her eyes that I just assume came from all the digging and gravel maintenance she has been doing recently, but just in case it may be some kind of fungus someone is familiar with I posted the best picture I could get of her. Any knowledge anyone could pass on would be greatly appreciated, I'm planning on growing a few of these guys out so I can see the results, so any information that could help ensure their success would be awesome. Oh I forgot one thing. I was curious if two female fish ever lip lock when fighting. I have a red devil in the other tank I was hoping was a female but he's been going at it with a 100% female JD for a few days now.

it's normal for female cichlids going into over aggression mode once the fry are swimming. I'd probably leave them in and and transport the little guys when you can. as for the disease, keep your eye out for Columnaris (Cotton Wool Disease) would be my only guess.

Awesome, I'll do some research and keep an eye on it. How long do you think they will tolerate the fry being in the tank? Is there a chance I could grow them out with the parents or will they become aggressive with them at a certain size/age? Thanks for the heads up.

they will tolerate them probably until they are ready to breed again. they will probably become fish food at that point. If you want to grow em out, i'd say just prep a grow out tank for the fry. it's easier to take care of as well without the parents getting crazy on your fingers =P

Damn. Time to break out the 20 tall again. I hate that weird tank. Thanks again for the replies though. By the way, do you have any ideas about the red devil I was talking about? It looked like the lip locking Ive seen pre-breeding, which I'm hoping it's not because that would throw my male/female ratio off in the wrong direction. I don't mind having extra females but extra males always make trouble with each other as they grow. Have you ever seen two females lip-locking?

Nice work, lol seems like everyone's getting/breeding convict hybrids atm. :P As if it's an 'in' thing or something. Chris just got a flowercon, you're having jagcons, shenzen is making kingkons (yes I made that word up), and I have ellicons. XD

The white patch seems like an injury. Be wary of it. If you remove the fry, you can dose her tank with salt to treat her. :)

As for the red devils, females do lip-lock sometimes to show off their dominancy.

Thanks buddy, I appreciate the response. Just so you know if it was "in" now it's "out" because I did it. It's a trend killer when the guy that doesn't even own water testing equipment can do it. I went Jonvicts instead of Jagcons as well, it's cornier. I had a brief thought today about breeding one of the females from this batch with this younger male Dovii I have just to see if I could create the antichrist of fish. I'm not going to, but I am already 2/3rds of the way there. Proxy Im not selling or shipping any but I will give you as many fry as you'd like if your ever in town.
