i have two jaguar cichlids around the same size about 3 inches long and i was wondering at wat size that they would start breedn and how would i tell them apart....
I just got 3 in the last two days, they are freekin sweet (same size). I have been waiting to keep these guys for years. As for coloration im not sure. I'd be interested to hear the responses. For a little info try my thread "small jags" in cichlids.
The patterns will be much like the Dovii. Females will have a stronger dark bar threw their mid section, where males will be either silverish or tan with dark spots.
the male managuense is larger longer in body size and shape.. much more vivid in color and darker too... the female is shorter(stocky or stubby) more plump. usually golder in color and a little timid until the egg's are laid..they can spawn at ruffly 6'' in size ...
Well first off ive personaly had a pair of jags lay first batch succesfully at 3 inch for male aprox 2 inch for female. Mid 70s seem to be the trick for breeding. like 76 f maintain temp for a week or so slack off on the w=atter changes like let it go for three weeks maybe 4 . shouldnt hurt fish if you got good filtration. then do like a 35 to 40 percent watter change on the tank with slightly cooler watter. wait aprox 4 maybe 5 days if they gonna breed they gonna do it then.
look for them to swim up to each other and shake there whole body like a siezure and for them stakeing out a rock . i prefer a rock some prefer clay pots you chose wich. After eggs are laid keep eye on them . sometimes they screw up first batch and they dont get fertle. if they fertle they will turn a baige opeak color. if not they will start turning white after the 3 or 4th day. when u see wigglers. wait till they free swiming till u start feeding them. I have had success with liquid fry numvber 1 for food. but last two batchs i used crushed up flakes intoa powder.
Curently i have a fresh batch of eggs my self . They layed them turkey morning woot. Ima take some pics probly over the weekend i will post them up for you.
this first pic is the male that was aprox 3 inchs first batch of eggs.

Thats why i posted three difrent pics of males and two of fe males.to show difrences that can ocure. USeualy idesay the malesaredarkerbut asyou see with my curent pair the male has less darker marking then the female.so you cant judge by that compare the button finage on the three males in mypics to yours
