everytime i get a jar it seems healthy but once i clean the tank its gills seem to curl..any one know why? i clean about 1/4 or 1/2 of the tank depending on my lazynessss

thanks

filtration? tank size? gph turnover on filtration? kinda chemicals do you use? what else is in the tank? i never seen a jar with girlls curling...

No your gills wont curl because of size alone... Are you dechlorinating your water!?! gill curl is due to bad water quality. If it's happening after cleanings I'm assuming it's high chlorine or hard water... Ammonia and nitrates can also cause this! Make sure to keep your water clean and use distilled or dechlorinated water.

yes test the new water before it goes in the tank ;)

what do you mean by hard water?
i have 75gal with a fluval 205 and a penguin 330
i change the filters out everytime i clean the tank about once every two weeks

what do you mean by "hard water"?

Hard water is water that has a high contente in carbonates and minerals ( dissolved in it )..it will be a water with the PH on the high side and with a tendency to keep it there.

You need, therefore, to "soften" your water. put in the filter, or inside a bag in a place where the water flows through, a fair amount of peat..it will make the water softer, lower the ph ( it will also turn water to the colour of tea but fish do not mind ).

You don't want to clean out your filters at so short intervals, because you are killing all beneficial bacteria that lives inside the filter media...so you are always starting again, your tank never cycles, fish die, you give up, another loss of fish and another lost hobbyist.

If you need to clean filter media ( sponges, for instance ) use the water from your tank, put it in a container and clean the media in that container...)

I do not know what else to say at this point...

YOU TWO!

there is no connection between hard water and gill curl, any arowana will thrive in hard alkaline water and have a 100% full health, softening water isnt nessesary at all, unless you want to replicate amazonian conditions just for kicks, otherwise its a waste of effort and money.

test your parameters for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, and dont tell me they are ok or good......read what the color chart says and report back :)

btw.....when you clean the filter, do you clean everything or just the mechanical part? if your cleaning the unit itself and the sponge you should be in good shape, the bio media should be left alone.

one more thing (that no one seems to ask) is how often do you change water?
