I have did some checking on jars. and tankmates, from what I have found is a jardini in a tank LESS then 180 gals. the odds of problems with tankmates is very high about 9 out of 10. will kill or beat up tanmates. Now with jardini's in tanks ABOVE 180 gals. the problem is reduced to about 4 out of 10Now this is from personel checking and is not from a book or somthing I read online. Now I would like to ask you here at MONSTER FISH KEEPERS what you think and if you have a jar or had a jar what size tank are they in and what problems have you had? This might be interesting to see what the numbers say on this site. Maybe to have a jar. and a tankmate you mught need a large tank.

Definately a one sided battle.More often than not the Jar won't work with tankmates. This does not mean it is not possible.I have seen quite a few tanks over the years here in Australia with succesful communities incorparating a Jardini. The most common is a single Jar with Pbass.
IMO a 180 gal min.The tanks you see that have not worked are more often than not bare bottom or just gravel with no structure.Often the case is the tankmates were not big enough or even robust enough.A lot of the cases I have seen, the fish that didn't last with the Jar wouldn't have lasted with most robust cichlids either.IMO it is trial and error to find a combination that works but then some Jars are just crazy!

Mine with tankmates. He is generally calm.Never jumps. The timber really seems to calm him down and he even swims through it all.As you can see there is different size cichlids in this tank and he leaves them all alone.I feed him market prawns, meal worms, fish fillets and hikari cichlid gold.

DUDE I LOVE YOUR TANK!! you are an inspirations!! :D

ive raised a australian along with a flowerhorn and oscar. Both of them were older than the aust. He only survived a little over a month and was attacked by the flowerhorn. Once he was weakened the oscar and the flowerhorn ate parts of him. . . . . i was so disappointed. :( i wanted to kill them

There is another theory that suggests that if there is "structure" in a tank (i.e. lots of wood/plants that can create hiding places and territories) the fish will establish territories and thereby increase the level of aggession.

I have been following this and other ideas in my efforts to reduce aggression in my monster comm. It's obvious to see though that your way works, too, but I think there are a lot of other variables.

I have a jar with 2 asians (all ~18-20"), 2 large knives, 2 pbass and lots of smaller fish ... tinfoils, CLs, synos, suncats, etc. ... in a 200 (6.5x2x2)

FWIW

IMO territory is more a trait of cichlids than that of the Jar.My Jar utilises the whole tank.No set territory. So for me that now means finding fish that won't go nuts at the Jar everytime it swims close causing it to fight back.Removing all structure has worked for me with cichlids before but with the Jar in the equasion,I found it better the other way around.I don't feed live feeders etc.
Keep lower than normal lighting.Keep it pitch black at night.
As to other factors,I agree.Like in your case, having it housed with simalar looking fish.Much harder to achieve IMO.You get 10 points for that.In the end it is trial and error but if no one tries,no one succeeds.

What I do see happening is everyone reading the majority of the posts saying it is not achieviable to house Jardinis with tankmates fullstop.Taking this information and never trying. Then because of this you will see even less cases of when it has been achieved.

Well said!

i think jars only kill there tankmates because they are competition for food and space. despite that everyone in the tank may get there equal share.

Well ... my jar shares a 6.5x2x2 with 6 other big fish (aros, knives, pbass) and there is always competition for food and space, yet he doesn't kill (or try to kill) anything.

Maybe I'm just lucky... ;)
